To Prosper, Not to Harm

During the Old Testament days of Israel's existence as a nation there were often trying times.  When the Lord God steps into life, life does not "magically" become better.  There are still struggles and trials.  Yet, the power and presence of the Lord is there to sustain through everything, good or bad.

At one point in Israel's history she found herself in exile.  They were not at home.  They were aliens in a foreign land.  They wondered about their future.  They had questions, even doubts.  Would they ever return home?  God sent his messengers to reassure them of his good intentions for them.  Jeremiah was one such prophet.  He gave them a powerful message of God’s intentions for his people.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
- Jeremiah 29:11

At times Israel had to live in hope.  At other times she tasted the goodness of the Lord.  Our lives are much the same.  God is faithful.  His intentions for us are good.  Life may not always be good, but we can live in hope because of God.  Even when physical life hits us with many difficulties, God holds out hope through his word, his people and hope for eternity.  We need to learn to trust the words of Jeremiah.  Sometimes hope is all we have, but when we hope in God it is not empty hope.  He brings blessings and shows us his faithfulness in the most surprising ways.  Glory be to God in the highest!
