The Body of Christ

When we think of the body of Christ we should think of the church.  We usually think of the church locally.  The concept of "body" implies that there are many gifts to be used in the church.  Body speaks of diversity.  We need each other and must make use of the full body in all of its member-forms to be complete.

But, now think of the church worldwide.  The church is the body of Christ.  As you move into different cultures the body will look and act differently because of cultural differences.  That is the way it is supposed to be.  If we think the church in Africa (or any other place for that matter) should look like the American church then, that is the same as saying that all members of a local church should have the same gift.

Paul gave thanks for the diversity within the body.  We must allow for cultural differences and give thanks for the diversity within the body that can make the church relevant to any culture.  Whether local or worldwide, the church is the body of Christ.  She can do the work of her Lord best only when diversity is encouraged and celebrated.  Otherwise the church of Christ, his body, is more invalid than alive.

Matthew 5:3 - 12

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you
