The Jesus Style

What would it be like if George Bush came to town?  Or John Kerry?  I am sure we would notice.  It would be difficult to get close to either of them.  In the first century the world was waiting.  Waiting for what?  Whom?  Waiting for the Son of God to make his entrance.  What would this be like?

The arrival of Jesus was not like a King, dignitary, High Priest, or other important figure.  For most of the world his arrival went unnoticed.  He had no "presence" that spoke of pomp or self-importance.  In fact, Isaiah indicated that people would not be attracted to him in a physical or popular sense.

He came as a baby, entered into the lowest social class, lived in obscurity for 30 years, made selfless choices regarding ministry, acquired neither a home nor wealth, did not "hobnob" with the influential.  He spoke plainly, identified with the disenfranchised, was a voice for the poor and oppressed, led people to God, lived what he preached, and ushered in a new understanding of God's Kingdom.  Simply put, he was a servant.

We speak frequently of becoming like Christ, being Christ-like, discipleship (which is to be a follower/student/learner of someone), or transformation.  What is this all about?  God is concerned that we become like his son.  If we are to be Christ-like, then it stands to reason that we should seek to be like Christ.  Obviously, we can't do that completely.  Yet, a Christian or church that is like Christ will seek to be a servant in the world because that was his major identity.  That perspective on life is what he called his first disciples to and it is his call to us today.  May we be like him, servants, living for the purposes of his Kingdom.  We are not the Messiah but servants of the Messiah and servants to our lost world.
