The
Woodlawn Church of Christ strives to be the kind of church
that scripture describes as God's workmanship in Ephesians
2:10. We try to be an authentic expression of the body
of Christ and family of God in Abilene. Churches are composed
of human beings that live in a specific culture and over time
generate a history of inescapable tradition, yet we endeavor
to teach the truth of God’s Word in a pure, unfiltered
form. Our experiences and view points tend to shape what we
say and hear, yet we believe that God has worked powerfully
in our past in ways that we should still recognize and honor.
We
are adherents of the American Restoration Movement led by
Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone. Their leadership and
the manner in which they interpreted scripture continues to
shape us today. Churches of Christ are distinct in the fact
that there are deep roots in a, “Thus says the Lord”
heritage. We believe that the members of Woodlawn Church of
Christ are “Christians only: nothing more, nothing less.”
We seek to follow God’s Word through His Spirit above
all, so that we might be the church that God is calling us
to be today in reaching this generation.
Our endeavoring faithfulness to scripture
and the work of God in our past, present, and future, keeps
us open to allow God to lead us to be more faithful and effective
servants in our rapidly changing world. We are excited about
our spiritual journey, yet at the same time, we take comfort
in the knowledge that God is the same today and ever more.
We honor the ways he has worked in the past and trust Him
where he takes us next on our spiritual journey.
Woodlawn held its first services on Sunday,
December 2, 1956. The construction of our building actually
came through the cooperative efforts of two Abilene churches,
with the property being given by the 16th and Vine Church
of Christ and construction supervision being given by the
Northside Church of Christ. Over the years, our family has
been blessed with a variety of leaders, all faithfully committed
to spreading the Gospel in Abilene and throughout the world.
By recognizing our past, we are better equipped
to present our vision for the future. That past has created
a prayerful church family, reaching out to people that are
hurting and broken by offering them love, acceptance, and
hope. We are actively sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ
with family, friends, associates, and our surrounding neighborhood
while also nurturing Woodlawn members to greater spiritual
maturity and equipping them for works of service. Lastly,
because we believe evangelism is so important, we continue
sending and sustaining missionaries and church workers in
many parts of the world.
