Think Not More Highly...

How do we think of ourselves?  It is so human to be overly impressed with ourselves.  The story is told of a young man who had been hired by the personnel department of a large supermarket chain.  He reported for his first day of work at one of the stores.  The manager of the store greeted him with a warm handshake, a smile, and a broom, saying, "Your first job on your first day will be to sweep out the store."  The young man protested, "But I am a college graduate!"  The manager replied, "Oh, that's right.  I'm sorry, I forgot.  Here, give me the broom and I'll show you how."

Paul's practical pointers on personal relationships in Romans 12 include: "Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought...honor one another above yourselves...do not be proud...do not be conceited...be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody."  Even more pointedly Jesus, after he washed the disciples' feet said, "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so...I, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet...I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.  I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him.  Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them."

Be impressed with Jesus.  Be impressed with servanthood rather than being impressed with self.  Service, not self, should be the hallmark of our life in Jesus.
