The Fruit No One Wants to Talk About

Self-control is a challenge.  It is something we do not like to talk about. Sounds too unpleasant.  In fact, as you think about this particular fruit it seems more "self" oriented than "Spirit" oriented.  "Self-control."  Nevertheless, that is why we need the Spirit's help.

Humans are too self-absorbed.  To have Jesus transform our lives we need help from the outside to become something other than what we naturally are, self-absorbed.  The Holy Spirit helps us reorient the "self" that is in each of us.  Just like love, the first fruit of the Spirit, is an overarching fruit, so is self-control.  For God to manifest his nature in us through these fruit of the Spirit the "self" must be controlled.

The "self" is that which is controlled and it is the Spirit who produces this fruit.  We are not naturally demonstrating the nature of Jesus Christ.  We are not naturally persons of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and gentleness to the degree that God wants.  The "self" gets in the way.  As you think about the fruit of the Spirit, understand that His fruit is produced to the degree that He influences, controls, manages your "self."

Yielding to the Spirit is at the heart of His producing His fruit in us.  The action of "self-control" may not sound pleasant but the fruit that is born is both desirable and pleasant.  Maybe we need to believe the popular slogan, "No pain, No gain."
