Sonny Side Up - Where's My Alter?

"Let's go to a church," my friend said enthusiastically in this huge capital we visited.

"Where are we going to find one?" another asked.  This was a country where Christianity was still foreign to most.

"Well, at least we can start asking if anyone knows what a church looks like."

Abraham qualifies as a believer who was well traveled.  Wherever he went, he was distinguished as a person who built an altar, a place of worship, for God.

Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree or Moreh at Shechem.  The Canaanites were then in the land, but the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land."  So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
  --  Gen. 12:6-7 (NIV)

An altar in Abraham's day was a stack of stone on which sacrifices were offered.  It served as a place of worship, giving thanks, prayer and where God had appeared to him.  A visible monument, always erected in conspicuous places, an altar stood as an unmistakable testimony of Abraham's faith in a foreign land and among people whose beliefs were very different from his.

Where is my altar? "My church" and "Going to church on Sunday" are inadequate and insufficient answers.  How is my faith visible and obvious to people around me?  Where does God speak to me?
