Hero

One of the results of 9/11 is talk about heroes.  Our world is certainly full of them.  Many of them are obvious because they are, as we say, "high profile" heroes.  Maybe they were well known before they became a hero, like a president, well known civil servant or clergyman.  Or, perhaps, the arena in which they served is one accustomed to producing heroes-such as war or adventure (astronauts).

With the experience of 9/11 we saw more common folks described as heroes because of their willingness to rush into harm's way in the midst of life's work: firemen, policemen, medical personnel and others.

Heroic acts are done when people have the courage to step out and participate in what is happening around them.  There is a real sense in which all of you who helped with VBS are my heroes.  Your willingness to step out, get to work, give of yourself, be unselfish, serve children, and help present Jesus to others is a kind of heroism we need in our world.  It is so tempting to retreat and stay uninvolved.

I want to say "THANK YOU" to each of you for giving it all to the Lord to make VBS successful.  Was it a success?  Yes!  God was glorified, you were faithful in service and people were served.  That in and of itself is success because it emulates the model of the greatest hero, Jesus.

Thank You

Hello from Korea,
It's been two months and I have missed the company of all my physical and spiritual family there in Abilene.  I want you all to know that you are remembered and loved.  Thanks for the cards and letters.  They truly add brightness to the day.  The congregation here is small and full of love.  God continues to bless me in many ways but at this moment you all are the dearest.  I've noticed in the bulletin that some have requested my address, so here it is:

May God continue to bless you all. Love, Woody

Prayer Concerns

Remember those who continue to battle serious illnesses.

In an email Chrissy Lau asked us to pray for the success of Rachel's receiving her visa to enter the USA and study in Abilene.

Charles Stelding asks for prayers for the people who have shown an interest in the newly established church in Leipzig, Germany.  He and Bill Short have been asked to stay an extra week to work with these LST contacts and help them make a smooth transition to a follow-up team who will be coming from the congregation in Austin which supports the work in Leipzig.

Sympathy

Our sister Rita (Oreada) Carroll passed away early last Sunday morning.  Her funeral was at Community Funeral Home on Tuesday morning.

Our sympathy goes out to Virginia Allen whose son, Oscar (O.E.) Reese passed away in Mississippi last Monday.
