Woodlawn Campus Ministry

"Aliens in the World"
Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon once described God's people in this way: "The church is a colony, an island of one culture in the middle of another.  In baptism our citizenship is transferred from one dominion to another, and we become, in whatever culture we find ourselves, resident aliens."

As you read this, Woodlawn's college students and young adults will be together with groups from Hillcrest, University, and Minter Lane at our Spring Retreat at Leuters.  Our weekend will include experiencing God in worship and in family fellowship, all centered on the fact that Christians are truly "aliens" in the world.  We expect this weekend to be spiritually transforming and unifying as our churches get together as God's "aliens and strangers in the world" (1 Peter 2:11). Please keep us all in your prayers as we seek to become the people God wants us to be.

Doulos Saturday
As the school year winds down, we have one more service Saturday on the horizon. On April 26, the Campus & Youth Ministry are teaming up to give our time and energy to the M.S. Society 4 Mile Walk.  If you or anyone you know is interested in making a financial contribution to the M.S. Society, please speak with Buck Hood.

     Yours for Him,
     Dwayne

Thanks

To the Woodlawn church,
Thank you very much for the flowers, the meal, and the beautiful service for Dad and Mom. Thank you for all the visits, calls, and cards during our time of loss and grief.  Words can never adequately express our appreciation for the love you showed to us.  Dad and Mom loved all of you, their church family, very much.  May the Lord bless you.  Love, Marsha Exum, Paul Jr. Ronald and Donald Landis - the children of Paul and Evelyn Landis

Many "chores" were done around the building last week.  Kip Soimo trimmed the hedges, cleaned out and replanted the flower beds.  John Fort and Dick Lago cleaned out the baptistry.  And the LTC kids also worked- washing inside windows, cleaning the stairs to the baptistry, dusting in the large auditorium, unloading cases of copier paper, etc.  Our THANKS to all of you !!

Prayer Concerns

Please remember those who are at home now, but continue to suffer with serious health problems.

Sympathy

We are saddened and extend condolences to Erlene Smith on the loss of her last sibling, a sister Ann McComas. The funeral was held in Winfield, Kansas last Thursday.

An Unshakeable Kingdom

Unlike your ancestors, you didn't come to Mount Sinai - all that volcanic blaze and earthshaking rumble - to hear God speak.  The earsplitting words and soul shaking message terrified them and they begged him to stop.  When they heard the words - "If an animal touches the Mountain, it's as good as dead" - they were afraid to move.  Even Moses was terrified.

No, that's not your experience at all.  You've come to Mount Zion, the city where the living God resides.  The invisible Jerusalem is populated by throngs of festive angels and Christian citizens.  It is the city where God is Judge, with judgments that make us just.  You've come to Jesus, who presents us with a new covenant, a fresh charter from God.  He is the Mediator of this covenant.  The murder of Jesus, unlike Abel's - a homicide that cried out for vengeance - became a proclamation of grace.

So don't turn a deaf ear to these gracious words.  If those who ignored earthly warnings didn't get away with it, what will happen to us if we turn our backs on heavenly warnings?  His voice that time shook the earth to its foundations; this time - he's told us this quite plainly - he'll also rock the heavens: "One last shaking, from top to bottom, stem to stern."  The phrase "one last shaking" means a thorough housecleaning, getting rid of all the historical and religious junk so that the unshakable essentials stand clear and uncluttered.

Do you see what we've got?  An unshakable kingdom!  And do you see how thankful we must be?  Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God.  For God is not an indifferent bystander.  He's actively cleaning house, torching all that needs to burn, and he won't quit until it's all cleansed.  God himself is Fire!

Hebrews 12:18-29 from The Message by Eugene Peterson
