The Tradition of Bible Bowl at Woodlawn

Bible Bowl at Woodlawn goes back to the years when Joe Hailey was our youth minister.  Joe took Larry Fitzgerald, the Landis twins, Jill Middleton, Kathy Flatt and others to Sunset in Lubbock during the days of the buzzer competitions.  Shortly after that, Delores Flatt coached Ellen Cranfill, Jeanette Bowles, Dana Flatt, Pam Pope, Sharon Bowles and Suzanne Young.  They also competed in the buzzer rounds where teams were eliminated as the day progressed.  I started coaching 26 years ago, and I can't begin to name all the kids that have participated in Bible Bowl, but I am safe in saying hundreds have benefited by studying God's word.  Coaches that I can recall are Boots Jarrett, Glenn Bailey, Karen Griffith, Kathy Redman, Gary Mabry and others that are no longer at Woodlawn.  Junior Bible Bowl was hosted at Woodlawn for 12 consecutive years and many kids went from Junior Bible Bowl right into the High-school competition.

For many years we have brought home trophies from competitions as far away as Fullerton, California.  We have competed at Sunset in Lubbock, 3rd and Kilgore in Portales, Westside in Midland, Montgomery in Albuquerque, Dana St. in Mesa, and for the past 3 years have been traveling to Los Cruces, New Mexico.  We have a reputation for winning 1st place and that is because our kids love God's word and they love to study.  I want to thank and praise our current team, Josh Alkire, Tyler Sparks, Jana Hill and David Wright.  No one complains, we study, we learn, we have fun and we win.  We are studying Luke and will compete in Albuquerque on March 4th, at ACU on April 3rd and also at LTC in Dallas.

Thank you for all your support and thanks to Clyde Foster who has been our van driver for the past 4 years.  He is quiet while we study, patient when we get rowdy, and he is great behind the wheel.  He also volunteers to score keep or help in the kitchen when we travel.

Coach Dixie

THANK YOU NOTES

Woodlawn Family,
Thank you so much for the many expressions of love you’ve shown through cards, visits, phone calls, flowers, food, and the list goes on.  Being confined in the hospital and at home while recuperating is certainly easier because of all the support you’ve given.  Thanks to each and every one!
Love, Viola Hopkins & family

Hello Woodlawn!
Greetings from Canada!  Sunde is teaching 4th grade at a local Christian school.  I finished my PhD in November and am teaching at local universities.  I am also ministering at a church here; Sunde teaches Sunday School.  We miss you all.  We have such fond memories of Woodlawn.  Let us hear from you!

Announcements

Shane has given us a chance to see an example of the baskets that the donated popcorn goes into and given to newcomers of Abilene as an outreach ministry.  This basket is located in the foyer and will be there for a couple of weeks.  Please continue to give popcorn and money donations for this ministry.

There will be a area wide church devotional next Sunday evening for the youth.

Medina Children’s Home will send their truck for our winter collection during the week of March 28.  They have asked us to collect toilet paper.  There will be boxes in the foyer for your donations.

Zena Donahoo has moved in with her family in Louisiana.  They plan on moving back to Abilene in the spring.  Her current address is C/O Angela Avery 539 Cross Gates Slidell, LA 70461.  Cards and letters would greatly be appreciated.

There are February and March calendars for the youth on Brad’s door.  Anyone willing to host a youth devo, please see Brad.

The children's ministry needs workers!  Our ministry is growing, and we have opportunities for you to get involved in several areas.  We will have a meeting this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the small auditorium for anyone interested in working with our children.

Next week is ACU Lectureship week.  That Sunday night there will be a short devotional for those who do not wish to attend the Lectureship.  Classes for that Wednesday night will be cancelled and in its place, we will be having a short devotional.  Monday morning Prayer and Care and Wednesdays Ladies Bible Class will also be cancelled.

Church Conversations

Sunday February 27 at 1:30 in the auditorium and is scheduled to continue up to 3:30.  There will be a short devotional afterward and no evening services.
